Sharp X68000 Information
Sharp X68000, often also called X68K – a series of home computers, produced in Japan by Sharp Corporation. In other countries, these computers have not been sold. The computer was based on Motorola 68000 processor that was running at 10 MHz frequency, 1 MB of RAM and it didn’t have a hard drive. The latest model released in 1993 was based on Motorola 68030 processor that was running at a frequency of 25 MHz, had 4 MB of RAM, and an optional SCSI standard hard drive with capacity of 80 MB. The RAM of this computers could be extended up to 12 MB, but most of the games and programs didn’t require more than 2 MB of RAM for their operation.
Sharp X68000 computer was working on Human68K operating system developed specifically for Sharp Corporation by Hudson Soft Company. The OS has a command line interface, and a set of commands, much like the set of the MS-DOS OS commands. Three versions of the Human68K OS were released, with some updates between the releases. Apart from Human68K, it was possible to use a special version of NetBSD for X68030 and OS-9. Early models had a graphical interface called “VS”, later models were supplied with SX-WINDOW GUI. Also, there was a shell called Ko-Windows, with an interface similar to Motif. These shells can be run from a floppy or hard drive. Most of the games are also could be run from floppy drive, some had optional installation on the hard disk, for some installation on the hard drive was mandatory. After the termination of the support of the system, OS Human68K, text console, C compiler for SX-Window and roms of Bios and ROM have been released for public access and now are freely available on the Internet.
