Feb 24, 2012 After pulling 'DESPERADO' from the bottom of a buried pile of CD's in my closet, I was reminded that this particular album is one my favorite Pat Martino recordings. In truth, every album Pat has ever made has a whole lot of fantastic playing but this one has some real unusual characteristics.

Allmusic | [2] |
Allmusic awarded the album 4 stars stating 'The guitar master is at it again on this collection of original tunes. Mixing up bop and funk with heavy doses of pop, he offers up a very listenable album with lots of character'.[2] Jim Santella from All About Jazz noted 'Guitarist Pat Martino exhibits his long-standing appreciation for the urban lifestyle of New York City and Philadelphia on his latest album Stone Blue. That cocky feeling of self-assurance one develops from living and working in the city gives rise to strutted rhythms, deliberate tempos, and melodies that range from sixteenth-note-laden confetti clusters to dreamy skyborne shouts'.[3] The All About Jazz critic, Josef Woodard commented 'What sounds timeless here is the leader, wailing with a kind of concurrent wisdom and go-for-broke commitment to improvisational abandon. The truth is that Martino stands up every time he plays. Hints of Martino's unique power is contained in each episode of his work, this latest chapter included'.[4]

Guitarist Pat Martino's first five recordings as a leader were made for the Prestige label, and this one (the fifth) has been reissued on CD by Original Jazz Classics. Martino performs Sonny Rollins' 'Oleo' and five of his originals, using the 12-string guitar. The rhythm section (keyboardist Eddie Green, electric bassist Tyrone Brown, and drummer Sherman Ferguson) is funky in spots, electric, and swinging when called for. Eric Kloss makes a guest appearance on soprano for the opening 'Blackjack,' but otherwise, most of the focus is on Martino's consistently inventive playing.
